The World Health Organization reports that about forty percent of Africa's population is made up of disabled people, that's almost 300 million people! Of these, 10 to 15 percent of disabled people are school-age children.
Disability is caused by many factors. The main causes are: malnutrition and diseases, including polio, which has already been forgotten in Europe, environmental hazards, increasingly frequent road and industrial accidents, and civil wars. The number of people with disabilities is constantly growing.
The vast majority of disabled Africans do not benefit from the education system, nor do they have the opportunity to work. They form a group of excluded people, the poorest of the poor. School enrollment for people with disabilities is estimated at 5 to 10 percent. Unemployment affects 70 to 80 percent of people with disabilities. The social stigma associated with disability marginalizes and isolates millions of Africans, often forcing them to beg as the only way to survive. People with disabilities also constitute a burden on their families, because they cannot participate in earning a modest income.
African governments do not invest in institutions for the disabled. Only a few schools and workplaces accept people with disabilities, these are mainly non-governmental institutions, including those run by missionaries. Together with the foundation, you can support disabled children in Africa, which we warmly encourage!
